Um 18:30 (Ortszeit) wurde im australischen Radio zum ersten Mal die neue Single von The Mars Volta vorgestellt. Das Comatorium ging völlig steil - Massenhysterie brach aus, Ripsoftware für Radiostreams wurde bereitgestellt, und parallel zur kollektiven "Euphorie" (um der Diplomatie und des Anstands wegen keine schmutzigen Wortgebilde zu gebrauchen) wurden hurtig-hastig Downloads verlinkt. Ein halber Tag später ist die Welt noch nicht heruntergekommen, doch hat man sich die Mühe gegeben, die Homepage neu zu launcieren sowie einen hochqualitativen Stream von The Malkin Jewel bereitzustellen.

It's... Bonkers.

Kaputt und kollabierend schlendert Omar's Gitarre voran, Deantoni randaliert sich groovend durch den Track, Juan macht sich breit und wummert Grund und Boden flach. In seiner boshaftesten Form präsentiert sich Cedric Bixler-Zavala; seit den geschluckten Glasscherben zu Frances the Mute-Tagen hat man keine solch bedrohliche Stimme mehr vom Herrn wahrgenommen. Die zerstörerischen Bedlam-Synthies gegen Ende des Tracks tun ihr Übriges, das Ganze mit kakophonischen Angstzuständen zu überreizen.

Future Punk des subtilen Grauens. Damen und Herren, die Afro-Dämonen sind zurück.

Stellt sich eine arme Seele nur die Frage, womit sie all diese Musik transportieren soll. Der iPod Touch stösst allmählich an seine Platzgrenzen, eine Alternative ist nur bedingt zu finden - sollte in absehbarer Zeit auch ein Update kommen, so sieht es denkbar schlecht für eine Erweiterung des Speicherplatzes aus. Andere Optionen sind Mangelware und ungünstig (Archos, Cowon..), womöglich bleibt da "nur" der iPod Classic übrig. Problems, problems.

Auch die Kopfhörerlandschaft ist keineswegs einfach zu überschauen; nach dem kleinen Debakel des Blaupunkts DJ 112 wäre es vernünftiger, weniger auf den Preis zu achten und gescheite Ware zu wählen. Leider hat sich aufgrund von mageren Testergebnissen der kurzlebige Traum der schicken Marshall Majors sogleich in Rauch aufgelöst, jedoch sind hochwertigere Produkte nicht unauffindbar. Bleibt nur das ewige Dilemma der eigentlichen Funktion: Handlichkeit oder HiFi? Problems, problems..

Recorded in the same two week session as Angels Of Darkness, Demons Of Light I by Stuart Hallerman (recorded Earth2!) at Avast! and mastered by Mell Detmer, Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light II carries on in the freely improvised, folkloric vein of the title track from the last release. Tape was rolled and spontaneous composition occurred.

Angels Of Darkness, Demons Of Light II is striking in many ways, not least in the wildly improvised nature of this particular recording. The songs 'Sigil Of Brass' and 'The Corascene Dog' perfectly emphasise how the interplay between the foursome becomes even more accomplished as the recording evolves, a testament to the dynamism of this particular line up. Meanwhile, the track 'His Teeth Did Brightly Shine' veers further into an entirely other direction, recalling sounds of the great British Acid Folk generation. This new material brings forth some highly original and deeply mesmerising tones throughout, at times more hopeful and less dark and death oriented than previous work.

Most bands will reach a creative peak at a certain point in their career after which they simply continue in a less interesting fashion before eventually calling it a day. Not so with Motorpsycho. After more than 20 years they continue to develop and to to challenge themselves artistically. On this epic, double concept album, easily their most ambitious yet, Motorpsycho has assembled the cream of classical and jazz musicians from world class ensembles established in Trondheim, their hometown.

"The Death Defying Unicorn" was first commisioned by Molde International Jazzfestival for their 50th anniversary in 2010 where it was performed on the main outdoor stage. This, however, has been partly re-arranged, refined and recorded from scratch at Propeller Studios in Oslo with Kåre Chr. Vestrheim once again co-producing as he did with "Heavy Metal Fruit". Ståle Storløkken (Supersilent, Elephant9, Humcrush, Terje Rypdal) is considered one of Norway's top keyboardists but here he also comes into his full as a writer and not at least arranger of the two ensembles. His contributions to this album can not be stressed enough. Among the players in Trondheim Jazz Orchestra are wellknown names such as Kjetil Møster (Ultralyd), André Roligheten (Albatrosh) and Mathias Eick, not to forget star violinist Ola Kvernberg.

On their second album, "Ariettes Oubliées...", Les Discrets appear significantly matured in many aspects. Teyssier's artistic vision is clearer than ever, and his vocal performance shows a big progression in comparison to past recordings. Winterhalter contributes arguably the best and most diverse drum performance of his carreer, and the sensitive, poetic lyrics of Audrey Hadorn add a further dimension to the album.

The album's tenor is more severe, yet the bittersweet melancholy and almost painful yearning - both characteristic for the debut, here they are more moving than before. "Ariettes..." is an elegiac and sublime album of enraptured beauty that develops Les Discrets' characteristic style in the hybridization of Post-Rock, Doom Metal, and Shoegaze convincingly in every element, to every extent, and which will cement the band's status as a cornerstone of a new, thrilling music genre.

Als ob das in letzter Zeit genügend nasse Wetter nicht reichen würde, musste es noch nasser, grauer und stürmischer werden. Das Klimaloch Basel weitet sich aus und verfolgt mich bis aufs Land. Curses!

Der altbekannten Prokrastination entgegenkommend verheisse ich kurz, dass Kayo Dot ihr neues Machwerk Gamma Knife - im weiteren Verlauf des Jahres noch auf Vinyl mitsamt neuem (richtigem) Artwork versehen erscheinend - als öffentlicher Stream offiziell präsentiert haben.

Das Eröffnungsstück weitet mit liturgischen Chorälen zur passenden Messemusik Toby Drivers bislang gezeigtes Sounduniversum um weitere Facetten aus, im schliessenden Titelsong finden die seit den letzten beiden Alben bekannten, speziellen und wiederum von feinen Untertönen begleiteten Gesangsnoten statt.
Absonderlicher und deswegen auch herausstechender sind die drei mittleren Stücke geraten, allesamt im Rahmen eines Live-Konzertes mit nur vier Mikrophonen(!) aufgenommen: Gitarrenbetonter, gehässiger und zu den Anfangstagen von dem maudlin of the Well-Überrest zurückkehrend sagt das Internet. In der Tat weichen diese drei Stücke stark von den vorangegangenen Soundkonzepten ab, sind jedoch nicht wirklich mit den Eruptionen der Erstlingswerke vergleichbar noch mit den fast traditionelleren Metaleskapaden der Vorgängergruppe gleichzusetzen.
"Grindcore", "Virus", "Black Metal", "Sludge" sind als erste Assoziationsversuche gefallen. Um den knapp 20 Verwirrung stiftenden Minuten gerecht zu werden hier nun eine genauere Beschreibung: Im Studio eingespielte Blasinstrumente schwirren und fliegen um tiefgestimmte Gitarrenausbrüche herum, in deren Mitte die Doublebass bedächtig knattert und dämonisches Gegrunze sich mit panisch-delirierenden Stimmen unregelmässig abwechselt. Zu vergleichen mit einer aus einer Tiefseeschlucht vernehmenden, diffusen LoFi-Aufnahme von improvisierenden Mitochondrion, Antediluvian und/oder Deathspell Omega. Genial.

Und als sei dieser (urpsrünglich ungeplante) grandiose Auftakt ins neue Musikjahr nicht schon verstörend genug, haben Meshuggah neuerdings das Versprechen bekanntgegeben, Ende März jegliche Existenz zu pulverisieren. Mother of God.

Ultimately, Les Voyages De L'Âme does exactly what the title entails: map a further chapter of the travels of a unique human soul capable of transfixing audiences with its dreams. Undoubtedly not yet Alcest's artistic masterpiece, but another step towards something unspeakable and ungraspable as yet. The tender angelic choral introduction to "Beings of Light" is still too tentative - it is something he hinted at in his AGM interview, mentioning his huge frustration at the impossibility to realizing in full his ideas as yet - but gives glimpses of much grander things to come. This third album ultimately might not smash ceilings but keeps working relentlessly at a magic recipe that possesses undeniable transcendental power, leaving us thirstier for the refreshing waters which pour from a metaphysical well the human being will always seek to drink from. Alcest is the oasis of the soul.

"Saivo" – an undercurrent of thought. Surging through veins. Passages flowing like a river stream into a timeless black lake. There, shapes seem to emerge – rowing with dead pace.

In the cultural world of the Finnish Sami, "Saivo" is one of the realms of the dead where the departed continue their everyday life, content and in the company of their families and forebears. "Saivo" is also the title of the new album by Tenhi that will finally see its release after four years of painstaking work at the end of November.

The album's long gestation period shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who knows and treasures the band's modus operandi. The Finnish musicians follow their vision mercilessly down to the smallest minutiae, which means that all of the songs have seen various arrangements and the adding of new elements until all the details of the album fit into the overall picture. On "Saivo", Tenhi use a largely consistent instrumentation to inform the tracks with cohesion and unison. Guitar and piano are the predominant instruments; at times, they are supplemented by percussion, strings, and polyphonic vocals, all in order to create a melancholic realm of sound characterised by this-worldly sorrow and other-worldly joy. The result is an album that is introverted in the truest sense of the word: just as it is believed that Saivo, the realm of the dead, may only be reached by an access under ambiguous lakes and that the journey leads to a mirror image of this world, Tenhi's "Saivo" also looks to the inner realms.

Tyko Saarikko has this to say, "The biggest change from our earlier album is that the scenery and landscapes of the songs are not directly related to surrounding nature as they have been usually. In this album, the songs reflect the echoes from an inner world that surely has similarities to surrounding nature but has its own laws of nature."

So, genug gewitzelt. Das Schreiben an sich ist zu einer mühsamen Arbeit verkommen, doch ausschliesslich auf popkulturelle Zitate zurückzugreifen kann ebenfalls ermüdend werden. (Stimmt gar nicht, es sieht mit dem langsamen Fortschreiten der Zeit einfach nur bescheuert oder ungewollt anstrengend aus.) Ein Bericht steht, weitere 37 Stück vermodern auf der Warteliste. Am Freitag stünde ein Besuch der alten Villa Rosenau als Zeitschinderei in Betracht, der folgende Abend wird vielleicht in einem Basler Konzertkeller verbracht und grundsätzlich ist das Wochenende verplant und vermaledeit. "Freude".

Edit: Mit einem Beggeschmutz zuviel in den Händen (besser: für eine zweite Person bestimmt) durch die überfüllten Messe-Strassen zu spazieren ist ein merkwürdiges Gefühl.

"Agape" – a non-physical, self-sacrificing kind of love – is the basic concept of Lantlôs' third album. While its predecessor ".neon" posited a nearly violently negative reckoning with the trinity of reality – perception – self, and lyrically and musically revelled in surreal, cold visions, Lantlôs harness these visions into new channels on "Agape."

The oppressive element of a dark flight from reality has given way to a new poetic dimension: warm and yearning lyrics are contrasted with brutal visions that trace the thin line between love and perversion. This contrast is perfectly captured in music on "Agape": heavy walls of guitars alternate with gentle acoustic parts, the changes in tempo hover between dragging and pacing. In addition, "Agape" will surprise you with extensive instrumental passages with a soft and warm atmosphere which doesn't shrink back even from jazz. Counteracted by the harsh, strangely cold vocals courtesy of Neige (Alcest), the compositions seem devoid of sense, oppressing, and sombre: beauty reversed into its opposite.

This contradiction which is so aptly expressed in the lyrics and the music is complemented by the elaborate design. "Agape" makes a visual impression with Herbst's own paintings that unite idiosyncratic thought bytes with nightmarish visions.

On the one hand, "Agape" is a radical departure from Post Black Metal, while on the other, it is also its consistent further development. An open contradiction in a lyrical, musical, and visual dimension, this work creates a vicious circle and at the same time neutralises itself. What remains is emptiness of a new quality.

Listening Session.

SÓLSTAFIR have come a long way. Their musical journey started in sounds as pitch black as the volcanic ashes of their Icelandic home in the year 1994 and continuously meandered into something 'different'. The band's latest releases "Masterpiece of Bitterness" (2005) and "Köld" (2009) already gained high acclaim from critics and fans alike for their unique mixture of dark Metal, psychedelic phases and eerily rocking groove.

'Insurgentes' was an important step for me into something new. This record takes that as a starting point, but it's more experimental and more eclectic. For me the golden period for music was the late sixties and early seventies, when the album became the primary means of artistic expression, when musicians liberated themselves from the 3 minute pop song format, and started to draw on jazz and classical music especially, combining it with the spirit of psychedelia to create "journeys in sound" I guess you could call them. So without being retro, my album is a kind of homage to that spirit. There's everything from [Ennio] Morricone-esque film themes to choral music to piano ballads to a 23 minute progressive jazz –inspired piece. I've actually used a few jazz musicians this time, which is something I picked up from my work remixing the King Crimson records.

It will be our 10th album/observation. I dig it; we all do. In fact, it feels like I've been building up to write for and participate on an album like this since I was 19.

It's quite intense at times in some 'old' murky way, and quite beautiful and stark at times, if I may say so myself. It's obvious I'm going to say nice things about it since I wrote, basically, the whole piece, but I guess it will raise a few eyebrows and it certainly is an acquired taste. I think you'll need a slightly deeper understanding of our music as a whole to be able to appreciate this record. I've realized my influences for this album are so diverse that I can't really say what it sounds like. If I can compare it to any other band, it would have to be Opeth, but it's different from the stuff we've done before. I've listened a lot to Alice Cooper for the last year, yet I can't say it sounds like No More Mr. Nice Guy. I hope you'll like it once you hear it.

I got into a daily rhythm of greeting the weak winter sun in the morning, working outside in the rain until midday, then retiring to our studio to work on the music late into the night. I did this nearly every day for two months. Quite a monastic lifestyle, actually. I didn't see many people. We were totally lost inside the record. Once the record was conceived from beginning to end, we met with Randall and started to slowly build the tracks at his studio in Seattle.

I think that this album will be the best thing that WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM has created. We've never been able to devote this much time to writing and recording. It feels like this will be the culmination of everything we've done up to this point.

Fearing Elves Have Been Angered, Town Meets With Priest

Many residents of the town of Bolungarvík suspect that construction of a tunnel has displeased the nearby mountain elves, and that they are responsible for machinery breaking down.

A common stereotype about Icelanders is that most of them believe in elves, trolls, hidden people, and similar supernatural beings. While this is untrue, figures from 1996 show that 26% of Icelanders believe the existence of elves is certain or probable.

Morgunblaðið reports that some residents of Bolungarvík are among them. It is reported that workers from the construction company Ósafl, which is building a tunnel between Bolungarvík and Hnífdalur, have run into repeated and unexplained problems. Two engines inexplicably shut down on Tuesday, as did two more on Wednesday. Yesterday, explosive work being done to remove rocks experienced an error, sending stones raining down upon two residential streets.

Spiritualist and healer Vigdís Kristín Steinþórsdóttir believes construction work has angered the elves who live in the mountain where the tunnel is being made, and that further accidents will happen if they are not appeased. Taking that into consideration, a meeting was called yesterday between construction workers, townspeople, and Rev. Agnes Sigurðardóttir, who performed blessings over the area in the hopes of driving the elves away or otherwise calming them down.

Whether or not the blessings worked, only time will tell.

Unrelated: On Stranger Tides war/ist eine klassische Nachfolge der ersten Trilogie und macht es sich neben dieser ganz bequem. Ein geradlinig(er)er Plot, tolle Kostüme sowie erwartet witzige Dialoge, gekoppelt mit komischen Figuren-Konstellationen, unnötigen Elementen und Kitchfrevel. Ganz ok. Bei The Tree of Life hingegen sollte man auf einer tiefgründigen Analyse verzichten, diese drei Stundem möchten nur aufgesogen und tagelang verarbeitet werden. Ein schöner, once-in-a-lifetime-Film mit seinen kleinen Macken, doch lebensgrossen Bildern. It's truly a little beauty.

Cave In's first full length in more than half a decade speaks to us in ways we're still processing. Were there not deadlines to meet, and onehseets to submit, we would be taking a bit more time to reflect further on why we find this album, and this band, so important to us. Had you told us in 1997 that we'd be here, in Spring 2011, prepping a new Cave In album, we very likely wouldn't have registered the sort of impact that fact might have on our lives. Now, a dedade and a half since we began working together, we find ourselves humbled and emotional while reflecting on the depth of meaning we find in our relationship. As friends, and as business partners, we've seen each other grow and stumble with an ebb and flow that feels every bit as powerful as this album we hold in our hands. The sentiment we feel while listening to White Silence is every bit an indicator of the bond we're grateful to have with old friends who happen to collectively bust out some of our favorite jams time and time again.

White Silence has an energy and a balance that feels like the work of seasoned vets, consummate professionals that have, with great heart, focus and authenticity, honed their songwriting ability in ways we feel fortunate to have witnessed first hand. If you followed the member's individual trajectories after Cave In's un- declared 2005 hiatus, you'd have been witness to a spectrum of songwriting capabilites. Brodsky's singer-songwriter eccentricies, Zozobra's 2-piece metallic power, Cloud's rock energy, and Doomrider's thunderous roll; all tastes of the potential a re-unified Cave In might present. 2009's Planets of Old was a four song return to form, a small taste of what Cave In were capable of producing with so much experience under their individual and collective belts.

And produce they have. White Silence exudes the feeling that what matters to them is, and perhaps always has been, what happens when these four come together. As we sit here attempting to verbalize this album's impact, we see Cave In and White Silence spatially, formed by each member's own locus of control....it all seems to make so much sense, really. White Silence brings a focused sense of dynamic and a variety that owes everything to the band's collective ability to do it all. The album's driving intro and delicate conclusion bookend a collection of tracks that have continued to fill and thrill Hydra Headquarters day after day for the last few months.

We are giddy at delivering White Silence as a new chapter in the ongoing story of one of our favorite bands. From 1998's Beyond Hypothermia, 1999's Until Your Heart Stops and 2000's Jupiter, right up on through the ep's and releases of the last decade, we're touched, and motivated, by how meaningful and important this album and this band remains to us. We suspect we're not alone in the sentiment. Coming soon to a record store near you ;)

We spent somewhere in the realm of 5 months recording it (although truthfully, we've been planning and sketching the record since we began touring on Hospice back in 2009). We moved into our own recording studio in September 2010, and spent essentially every waking hour working on Burst Apart, producing the record ourselves, with Darby at the helm engineering. We wrapped up recording this past January, and will be releasing this record to you on May 10 via Frenchkiss Records. I can honestly say that I've never been more excited to have people hear something as I am with Burst Apart.

With a heavy heart we can now announce that Roy Khan has chosen to leave the band. We wanted to give him ample time for this kind of decision, due to his recent burnout and also the amount of amazing times we have shared with him in Kamelot. We respectfully accept his resignation from the band and wish him the best in his future endeavors. The timing is actually good since we feel the uncertainty the fans have had can now be laid to rest and the band can move on to finding a new singer. "The tour is going great so far and the fans have been amazing throughout this entire process" – adds keyboardist Oliver Palotai. With the new tour already in progress, Kamelot has already begun the search for a new vocalist. "I have a few guys in mind", said band founder Thomas Youngblood. “And as you can imagine, it is a very important decision. There are some amazing singers that have already contacted us on this but we will take our time to find the right person”. Due to the overwhelming success of the recent shows in South America, we are pleased to announce new shows in November/December for Europe (stay tuned).

Nevermore guitar player Jeff Loomis and drummer Van Williams have announced their departure from the group. The two have released a joint statement:
"In a mutual decision Jeff Loomis and Van Williams have decided to leave Nevermore. The time has come to pursue our own paths from the group. Due to internal struggles and ongoing issues within the band, we feel it is our time to move on. We would like to thank all of our fans around the world for their years of love, support and enthusiasm. This was not an easy decision but a very necessary one at this point, may we all meet again someday, somewhere in time."

Loomis and Williams had been with Nevermore since the band's first album, 1995's self titled, Nevermore.
NEVERMORE recently announced that they would be cancelling their planned tour with Symphony X. No information regarding additional confirmed tour dates is known at this time.
